Linking a maiko hikizuri to a maiko.

For some very lucky collectors it is possible to find a maiko or geiko wearing a kimono or obi they have bought.

As I also collect odori programs I am often asked by people who have purchased hikizuri/darari obi to keep an eye out for their new treasure.
I always say I will but just the sheer quantity of dance programs I own means that's a tough task in its own.

I was contacted by a fellow collector the other day asking me to check an early 2000's Miyako odori program. They had found an old IG forum thread that said that kimono featured in the program.
So that was easy enough to do.
I checked said program and the kimono didn't make an appearance.
Disappointing but "no worries" I thought, "just check a few years earlier and later, the dates might have been mixed up."
So I went back a couple of years and sure enough I found a small black and white photo of the kimono!
Yay! I had some good news to tell the owner.
As I was flicking through the second dance program I noted how odd it was that the kimono only featured in one of the photos.
Usually the black and white photos in the back feature a small group of maiko with various temples, events or other attractions.
So I thought to myself maybe the people who put together the dance program have re-used this photo from a previous year ( not an uncommon thing to do, but you see it less in recent years)
So I went back a couple more years and jackpot!
There was the kimono in question, in colour, on the first page.
9 years earlier than originally thought, 2 years earlier than the black and white photo.
The kimono has many photos in that dance program in the black and white section so the new owner should be delighted.
I've included just a couple here that show off the kimono design best.

The kimono I'm talking about is the purple one worn by maiko Mari.
Congratulations to the current owner, knowing who is wearing it and being such a modern piece means it is a lot easier to find out more about its history.
I really enjoyed helping this person out, I was as excited as they were to find a maiko wearing it

Odori and random maiko postcards and posters sale

Yeah, I'm still sorting through stuff.

I had honestly been debating for the past year or so whether to sell my odori collection, but chances of finding someone who would want them is a bit slim.

But if you are interested I have all the Kitano odori I've collected for sale, my outside of Kyoto odori, Miyako-no-nigiwai odori, Onshukai ( autumn dance for Gion Kobu) and vintage booklets for pre-ww2 Miyako and Kamogawa odori.
Plus some pretty postcards, the 1968 calendar featuring Mineko Iwasaki, I've also got 4 Miyako Odori featuring her as well and some lovely maiko posters that I've personally not seen elsewhere.

I've got them put up on my Flickr again and a few things I've put up on Etsy and/or Ebay.
I'll link them under each photo and whichever avenue you'd prefer to use, cool.

There's some other things in my sales folder that I haven't put here so have a look over there if you're interested.

Book Sale!

Sigh.
I'm sure you know how hard it is to sell parts of your collections?
I've recently come to the conclusion that with a baby on the way I will need to let a lot of things go.
I'm not thrilled about it as I've spent years collecting my goodies but basically we don't have the space for them anymore.
So I started with books.
Pretty photo books.
Hard to find, only on YJA books.
just saying....

So get ready for some lovelies!
Right now I'll just be selling them privately through my Flickr and blog accounts to save on fees but if I have trouble moving things I'll list them on eBay.
( I realise some people feel more confident buying on eBay and I totally understand that too so they will eventually be for sale there.)
Of course, there's always Paypal's protection policy should something go wrong ( lost in post etc) but knock on wood that hasn't happened to me yet.

Miyako odori poster.
Is slightly creased but still would look really nice if framed and hung.

Re-discovered goodies

Ha.
About two days after my last blog post the bf and I decided we (I) should paint out my craft room. I'd only just got my room back and we pulled everything out again!
Luckily it was a slow week for me at work so I had plenty of time to get it painted and started organizing everything to go back into the room yesterday.
While I was sorting through all sorts of interesting things I came across some old maiko postcards and vintage posters that I haven't had a chance to scan yet.
Here's a few quick photos:

The posters seems to be just larger versions of many postcards I've seen.
Nevertheless I'll try to scan them anyway.
In this last photo I've got two of the same Kamogawa odori however you can easily see the difference in the colour of the two covers. Obviously the one on the left has been stored with care as the colours are still bright and vibrant as opposed to the right one which is faded and dark.
I've also got some pre-ww2 Miyako and Kamogawa odori, really need to get back into my odori programs!
